Neston
is a former mining town and was also a major port before the
river Dee silted up and the port was shifted further upstream
to the nearby town of Parkgate. One of the main local
attractions is Ness Botanic Gardens.
Neston
has a railway station on the Borderlands Line from Wrexham Central to
Bidston, for connections with Merseyrail trains to Liverpool. On the
first Thursday of June,
Neston
celebrates what is popularly called "Ladies' Club Day". This is a
unique marching day involving many girls and women carrying
flowers, bands, uniformed organizations and representatives from local
churches. This event usually takes place during the week when a
travelling fairground visits
Neston
for its annual week's visit. This whole celebration is one that has
links to the
Neston
Female Friendly Society during the Napoleonic War.
